Introducing ‘Her Voice in the House’

It all begins with an idea.

Parliamentary focus is heavily weighted towards the House of Commons- but what about the House of Lords? Parliament’s second chamber is often overlooked and not given the attention it deserves in the legislative process.

Women make up 30% of the House of Lords, with all of them life peers or bishops. They couldn’t sit in the Lords until the Life Peerages Act of 1958 was passed and the first Lords Spiritual Peers began to sit in the Lords after 2015.

I’ve always been interested in the role of women in the Lords. There are so many distinguished and talented women who have taken their seats- from business to science, politics to the arts- their ‘second careers’ help to make our country richer.

Her Voice in the House will spotlight female Peers who are paving the way on the ‘red side’ of Parliament. Cross party and cross bench, we’ll hear in their own voices the work they’re doing, the campaigns they’re championing and how they’re making a difference in their own way.
